Heatin’ Up!

I have been working hard lately on a travel show for China, so this picture is special: I’m in a helicopter – at the Grand Canyon!!!! And yes, I am afraid if heights. Does it show?? Haha!

The show at the Tustin Gallery (Saturday, May 3rd) was the most fun I’ve ever been lucky enough to be on at the Gallery so far!!! These just keep getting better, so be sure to catch the next one if you haven’t been yet!!

Tonight I had a BLAST with some brand-new friends on the “World’s #1 Comedy Reality Radio Show” The LIVE FROM THE MORGUE PODCAST!
Listen Now!
It was a lot of fun and I am hopeful to come back soon!

On a more serious, important note-
One of the most influential and cheerful teachers I have had in my lifetime – the one who finally made me think History was interesting, and HOW did I not see that before?? – is having a building dedicated to him at my old high school, and deservedly so. He has been struggling in a fight against cancer and we are now in “dark days” (his words). This dedication ceremony will very likely be the last time I see him, though I still hope it isn’t. This man is brimming with character. If there were a movie about him, he’d be a CRAZE to rival the Austin Powers franchise! I hope to someday make just that – a movie celebrating all that is the hilarious and warm Mr. Williams. He’s a man who is gentle, who has never hurt a soul. His students adore him, and want to protect him from pain or troubles. It’s rare that you find a teacher who touches so many hearts in such a pure, honest way, and I am so, so grateful to have his friendship and our shared experiences with me always.

Share your love with those around you! You never know what will change!!

Spring Forward…!

Well, year #3 at the Grammys was the BEST so far!! I was able to do a bit more star-gazing (it’s always fun to see someone in person after hearing SO much about them – I think that’s why we as humans are so drawn to celebrities and royalty), and the time flew by! Our group of “Ladies In Red” had terrible seats, but we were next to Ron Jeremy so we didn’t feel TOO bad about it – I guess HE couldn’t get good seats either, haha! It’s amazing how long the Grammys ceremony is – they only air the GOOD parts on TV, while the rest of us had to sit through HOURS of awards being presented to no one I had heard of… OH, if you didn’t know, the Grammys have been held at the Staples Center for the past few years, and there is a rule there where once you are inside you can NOT leave. If you leave the stadium, your ticket becomes useless! People still offer to buy your ticket outside without knowing that. I hope no one gave in! Anyway, because of that rule you HAVE to sit through all four hours of the event. Another little-known fact you won’t hear about anywhere else: unless you have a private suite in the stadium, there is NO ALCOHOL sold during the Grammys!!! Imagine it, hundreds of MUSICIANS and no booze!
Well, there is ONE place, but access is very limited, it’s the whole reason I am there at all, and that’s ALL I will tell you πŸ˜‰

I had a great time at the Tustin Gallery of Performing Arts on February 1st, in comedy news! Great line-up, and a headliner I have known since before I even started doing stand-up, Claude Stewart! It was nice to share the stage with someone who contributed to my ascent into the field πŸ™‚

Marilyn news, this time, is a little different…

NEVER STAY AT ARIZONA CHARLIE’S OR THE STRATOSPHERE HOTELS IN LAS VEGAS!

Now, I would never, EVER put someone’s job in jeopardy for doing something phenomenally inappropriate unless I was ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN something awful had been done. With that in mind…
John and I were working the Consumer Electronics Convention in Las Vegas this year (and he was performing at the Laugh Factory there), and because I was in VEGAS I, of course, took Marilyn with me! John and I stayed at a hotel called Arizona Charlie’s close to the convention center. It’s part of the Stratosphere chain. We left my wig and costumes in the room and went to Day One of the four-day expo. When we returned, our room had been cleaned. I got ready for a night of Marilyning… only to discover upon wigging that… THE MAID HAD WORN MY WIG!!!!
Yes, you read that right.
There is no denying it.
The wig that I have worn so often and know like it’s my own hair… The wig that I wash and style MYSELF and know every detail of… was SO stretched out from misuse (and likely the man-hands of someone trying to stuff their giant hair into it without a wig cap) that when I put it on and turned my head, I could feel it FLOPPING AROUND behind my head!!!!!! The spaces between the lines of curls were so stretched apart that you could clearly see MY wig cap underneath.
RUINED.
I reported it to Bryanna, the front desk manager, and she stared blankly at me with NO surprise in her eyes at all that this happened, eventually saying, “That isn’t my department. You’d have to talk to Security.”
I asked her to call them and she finally showed surprise, as if it hadn’t occurred to her that she had access to a phone. he called Security for me, and they walked me over to their little casino booth and had me fill out a Statement form. I asked for a copy of my statement, and THEY acted surprised as if they’d have never thought of that. They obliged. John and I kept the “Do Not Disturb” sign securely fastened to the door of the room, as we did NOT want anyone coming and and trying on anything else – our hairbrushes, or TOOTHbrushes, who knows?
24 hours passed.
Nothing.
I called the front desk and asked Bryanna what was happening with my statement. She said she had sent an email to the head of housekeeping and did not know anything else past that because, of course, that also “wasn’t her department.”
The head of housekeeping (Shayla?) did not call me back until the day AFTER WE CHECKED OUT OF THE HOTEL.
I called Security and asked them for an update as to what was being done. They said they had performed “lock interrogation” to see who had access to our room. It seems this chain has no idea which housekeepers are in which rooms at any given time. They had not figured anything out “yet”.
The next day, another 24 hours later, I called again. They were surprised no one had called us to apologize (NOT ONE employee said “We’re sorry that happened to you” until TWO WEEKS after the incident was reported). They now said they had “checked the video cameras” outside our room to see who had gone into our room that day. They did not give me any information about this. They did say whether or not they had checked the maid’s phone for pictures of her in my wig, which – come on – you know she took some.
In our entire stay there, we never received new towels, soap, you name it. All the while, the maid who did this still had open access to our room and obviously no regard for rules or propriety. It was an extremely uncomfortable and stressful week. We left our valuables in our car, which didn’t provide us with much more security as the parking lot was littered with garbage and hypodermic needles (we took pictures, I’m not even kidding here).
After leaving Las Vegas and returning to Los Angeles, two weeks after this happened, the head of housekeeping had directed us to the hotel’s Risk Management department (what they had to do with anything I will never know). Upon reviewing my livid statement (wigs are NOT CHEAP!), their official response to me was, in exact words: “The hotel has completed it’s investigation, and we have closed the file. You will not be receiving any compensation for this as we do not believe that it happened. This is our final stance on the matter You have a good day.” *click*
There it is. Official permission for the maid service in this hotel chain to try on your things with absolutely no repercussions
If you are going to Las Vegas to get married, go the extra mile and stay somewhere nicer than this. I would hate for you to hang your gorgeous wedding dress in the closet, only to come back to your room and find that some giant maid had tried it on and ripped the seams.
I have not heard from the chain in any way since the event, despite several messages to the hotel’s Manager, Justine Thomas, and a message left with the chain’s CEO, Bruce F Becker’s assistant “Jenny.”
I have paid in full for a new wig, and suffered through an entire week in a horrible, filthy hotel, no thanks to Bruce Becker and the Stratosphere hotels.

On the bright side, it IS hilarious that this kind of thing can even happen in 2014. With the use of the internet and travel websites like hotwire.com and yelp… did they think NO ONE would ever hear about this?!

πŸ˜‰

Autumn Updates

Oh my goodness, SO MUCH to talk about!!

PERSONALLY:

First off, I will let you in on this year’s Halloween costumes:
John and I were Navin Johnson and Marie from “The Jerk!” We wandered around Downtown Disney singing “Tonight You Belong To Me,” and yes, John had his chair, his brush, his lamp… and his pants around his ankles.

Unfortunately for me (especially if you’ve read my last blog!!), John chose the week surrounding Halloween to do a 7-Day CLEANSE – and I just HAD to show solidarity and join in. That’s right, folks. Halloween, and I can’t have any sugar!!!
I know. I should start a foundation or something. Tragic. Just tragic.
But I made it through the whole seven days relatively unscathed. I’m going to give advice on a cleanse in the words of the first woman to ever go over Niagara Falls in a barrel: “No one ought ever to do that again.”
(PS: Her name was Annie Edson Taylor and she was 63 years old at the time!)

FASHiON TALK:

I was fortunate enough to walk the runway in another bridal show with SF Productions, this time at the beautiful Sweet Pea Ranch in Upland, CA! The picture for this blog entry, actually, is from that day, and was taken by Enchanted Portraiture’s own Andrija! It was a dusty day full of gorgeous dresses!!

ENTERTAINING:

Singing the Anthem at Angels Stadium. Landmark in my life. There it is. Done it. Feels good!!!

If you haven’t checked out Once Upon A Time Character Company yet, then please do! I have posted pictures in my Entertainer photo album in the Gallery – do take a peek, the dresses are inCREDible!!!! I have honestly searched far and wide for a princess party company that even comes close to the quality of experience that Disneyland offers (let’s face it, Disneyland is THE standard for this kind of thing), and THIS company is the very best, bar none. It does help that all of the princesses are or were at one time “Cast Members,” so you know you are getting the real deal! Amy Jo started this company with the incredible love she holds in her heart for what it means to be a role model for little ones and making their dreams come true, and you will feel that love at your event – I personally guarantee that.

MARILYN:

I only started playing Marilyn a little over one year ago, and now I can’t write an update without mentioning what “she” has been up to lately – she has become such a HUGE part of my life!!! Admittedly, I have always adored her and admired her drive and charisma, her talent and of course her looks and style, but I never imagined that someday I would be so deeply immersed in her story and every little detail about her routines and innermost thoughts. It isn’t always all roses (it’s amazing how differently people treat you when you are portraying such an iconic symbol of so many things… not always terribly respectful, I’ll tell you that much!), but if I am completely candid: I absolutely love, LOVE, going to work. There is a sadness beneath the character that lingers just below the surface, but the effervescent bounciness and glow is GREAT fun, and the overwhelming majority of responses is LOVE. I am so lucky to be able to “clock in” and simply smile and absorb pure love from strangers, and knowing that it is a love I appreciate as a fellow admirer makes it mean that much more to me. Playing Marilyn really does fill up my heart with joy. I am so thankful for the honor of playing such a complex, generous, and intelligent woman. Even after so many years of so-called absence, she continues to give joy to myself and those who love her. Through this, she is continuing to earn the love we feel for her. Well done, Norma Jeane. That’s our girl!

A VERY talented photographer named Emily Berl reached out to me for a project she is doing on exactly this topic – specifically, what IS it about Marilyn that keeps her SO prominent, even today? I am honored to be a part of it, and I can’t even tell you how nervous and THRILLED I was to be in front of her old-school film-winding lens!!! I don’t have any of the pictures yet, but you can be sure that when I do they will be showing up on here, and on my Impersonator Fan Page!!

I was also blown-away to be invited to a super-swanky rooftop party in Hollywood by Porsche!!!! I met people from literally ALL OVER the planet!! It was very exciting, and ultra-glamorous! I’ll be certain to post a few pictures in my Marilyning album if I can track any down….!

**

Ok, I think that’s all of my news this time, but as always keep checking back for updates on Comedy Shows or public Princess or Marilyn gigs you can attend!

PLEASE be safe this holiday season. Hugs to every single one of you. And unlimited, infinite thanks for continuing to believe in me <3

I Love It When A…Flan…Comes Together

It’s almost Halloween!!!!!

Every year I say that Halloween is my favorite holiday. But then, I also say that about Valentine’s Day, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Groundhog Day.
The last few years, John and I have done team costumes (Carol Burnett’s curtain rod dress with Tim Conway’s oldest man, and even Mr. Garrison – yes, me – and Mr. Slave). This year will be no different!! But I won’t tell… yet!
I’m not sure how Halloween went from being about the dead rising, to dressing up as ghouls, to dressing up as the latest pop-comedy reference or double-entendre, but I also am not too concerned with it because…. *drumroll* there’s CANDY involved!!
Ok, I lied – my favorite holiday is the day AFTER Halloween, when all of the candy is on Clearance.

…Now that I’ve shaken out the excitement of October’s big day, on with the updates!

I was so fortunate and honored to be involved (as Marilyn) in the industry event of the year for Waste Management professionals (read: the mafia… right??) at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center! These are the folks who keep the planet clean, beautiful, and renewed… THANK YOU to Swana for inviting me to be a small part of it and to thank you all in person for everything you do!
(Pictures in my Marilyn photo album)

In the fashion realm, SF Productions called on me once again to perform in their latest Bridal Fashion Show, this time at the Staples Center!! I was excited to wear a pinky-peachy bridesmaid dress with lots of girly bows – Pics are in my Fashion album!

If you want to see me strut the catwalk LIVE… you can!
I’ll be “bringing bridal realness” to the runway once again THIS SUNDAY, OCTOBER 20TH at Sweetpea Ranch in Upland, CA!
For tickets and more info, check out SF Productions’ Event Page! Come catch the bouquet!

I have a few other surprises coming up, but let’s not spoil them with words… Let’s WATCH them!!
More specifically, let’s watch…one!
Click on over to my ViDEOS Page and you’ll get to see my newest badge of honor – one of the commercials in the series for Disney Junior’s “Jake and the Neverland Pirates”!!! Yes, you heard right, the commercial is finally UP for your viewing-and-sharing pleasure!!!

The OTHER holidays are fast-approaching, so if you are planning to throw a big, fabulous family bash with all the relatives, perhaps consider a SUPER cool thing for the kids’ table – a REAL LIVE PRINCESS!!!
Cinderella, Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, Ariel… you name her, she’ll be there! Check out Once Upon A Time Character Company for THE best you will ever find!! Tell Amy Jo that Ashley sent you!
Or, if your party is Adults Only, how much FUN would it be to invite MARILYN? What better Christmas card than one with a Hollywood LEGEND in it?
Ok, you don’t HAVE to put me in your Christmas card, but it sure would give me the warm holiday fuzzies πŸ™‚

I may very well be delirious from all of this running around, so it’s probably best I leave it at that for now, but keep checking in to Ashleyland for more exciting news, videos and pictures!! And hey, why don’t you come on up and see me some time? I’m just a couple of comedy shows away!

Excitement Avalanche!

They say it is always quietest before the storm… Well after a couple of months of sporadic comedy shows and Marilyn gigs, things are definitely taking off!

Here’s what you missed:

I was so fortunate to shoot a promo/commercial for Disney Junior in June – can’t say much about it yet, but stay tuned and I will post more about that when it’s available to watch!

Speaking of Disney, yours truly has returned to the Disneyland Resort! I’ll only tell you this: You’ll find me there in the ONE place you can find Marilyn Monroe…(and I’m NOT talking about the rented shops in Downtown Disney!) Only the biggest Disney buffs will know where this is!

And speaking of MARILYN, I had *so much fun* in Laguna Beach as Marilyn for the Festival of Arts VIP opening night! I even got to play with a Charlie Chaplin character – what fun!
Then, Motorcar Parts of America called on me again for their big 60th Anniversary trade show at the Pomona Fairplex! Of course, I got to sing “Happy Birthday” for the big 6-0, and I even got to reminisce with Elvis – aka George Thomas from “Return of the Superstars”! Remember THAT?

In other good news, a friend once again enlisted me as his substitute acting teacher. I always love getting to see the talents of new students, so raw and eager!! Teaching is a great way to remind yourself of the youthful dreams you have, and it certainly motivates you to go after them! When you’re a child, you want to be everything, and you really believe that you CAN be (because, well, you CAN!). Now I know why adults put so much pressure on kids to attack their goals *immediately* after graduation – because life sure has a way of beating them out of you, and making you think you “don’t have enough time” for such things. That’s like saying you don’t have time to love!
Take it from me: THERE IS ALWAYS ENOUGH TIME FOR YOUR DREAMS!

For years I gazed up at the Improv stage, wishing I could get up there and make people laugh, and once again on July 30th, there I was. I can’t take full credit for being up there, of course, it was Ian Bagg’s show after all, but performing in front of a crowd at the Improv clubs (I have always felt at home there, as opposed to the other clubs, which feel more intimidating to me) gives me such a wonderful feeling!! I am so glad I didn’t let the nay-sayers hold me back (yes, there were nay-sayers!). Giving other people enough control in your life to alter your choices and your life’s path… is giving up your own greatest power – the power of drive. I may have always been driven, but the times in my life where I gave my power to others who did not want what was best for me are the darkest times I have experienced. The universe was trying to tell me to chase after my goals with a vengeance, and when I didn’t listen, it scrrreamed!
Ever since I have dedicated my focus to following my happiness, everything has changed. The world has opened up. Dream after dream began to come true – heck, I even started working as a princess with other current and former Disneyland Cast Members!
(Pictures available in Gallery album “The Entertainer”!)
(For information about booking these lovely, talented, gorgeous princesses, check out the Once Upon A Time Character Company! And make sure to tell Amy Jo who sent you πŸ˜‰ )

I keep wondering what amazing things will happen next… and being swept off my feet!

Somber Times Call For Entertainment More Than Ever

First off, I am obligated to “bring the realness” and address what is happening in the world, so I’m going to begin with the bad and bring it back around to the good, so please bear with me:

It’s hard to open your eyes these days without seeing some kind of explosion on the news. It’s very disappointing to me as a human being that we do these things. I have seen, as I am sure you have too, a few tasteless jokes and a couple of horrifying images showing up lately. You don’t have to worry about seeing any of those on my website or social media venues, as I am not comfortable behaving as if gore is the norm. We are fortunate in this country not to live in a war zone, becoming desensitized to violence and forced to see graphic mortality on a regular basis, and I find a lack of journalistic responsibility shameful. There is no need to take an awful situation and make it worse by exposing all ages and creeds to such evils. Seeing those images does not HELP us, and it does not provide us with a new understanding of “reality.” All it does is steal innocence and diminish hope and optimism, and none of that is a good thing. Along with the world news, I am currently waiting to hear back from a veterinary clinic about the well-being of a stray kitty that I found, half blind and dragging his legs behind him. So far they have told me that the left-eye blindness is neurological and may correct itself, and – the bad news – that the sweet thing had been shot with a pellet gun. Sometimes I wish I weren’t a human because of the things they are capable of, but I also realize that if I weren’t a human I couldn’t have helped to save this cat.

It’s times like these that entertainment is the most needed, if for no other reason than to remind us all of the positive qualities, actions, and beauty that IS still all around us.

So let’s move onto a lighter note or two!
I am grateful to have been involved in a beautiful vintage bridal show last month. Bridal shows are a wonderful thing to attend in any capacity, as they tend to be in rooms full of hope and elegance and cheer. Everyone is feeling excitement and eagerness and optimism for their big day, and artisans of all kinds are putting their best paintbrush, lace, cake or shoe forward. I hope to be invited to many more of these! Thank you to everyone who brought their smiles to this one.

The comedy show at The Ranch was also a pleasure! I grew up in the Paso Robles area, so the show kind of turned into a friends and family reunion of sorts. It never ceases to amaze me who from my past shows their support at different times.
I would like to take a moment to send all of you who have come to my shows my heartfelt appreciation: Without the support and laughs of you amazing people, I don’t know how much more bitter and sarcastic my jokes would have become. BUT FOLKS! In all seriousness, seeing familiar and caring faces in the audience has filled my spirit with light and love, and I can’t thank you enough for being there for me and really making the effort to share those moments with me. I am so grateful for your friendship, support, and unwavering kindness and generosity. THANK YOU, from the bottom, top and middle of my heart. And the sides of it, too.

Ok, so now that we’re all feeling mushy and warm, here are the UPCOMiNG APPEARANCES!

GRAMMYS, Comedy, Marilyn and Magazines!

Sorry for the gap, friends, but I have been all OVER the place working and moving! Now I have found a calm, quiet moment to update everyone on what I’ve been up to and what I’m *about* to be up to!

First, what’s been happening:

I went up to Paso Robles and did a photo shoot as Marilyn for INDULGE Magazine, San Luis Obispo County! The issue is on stands March 5th locally, or on the magazine’s website if you’re not local or just like looking at a glowing rectangle when you read :p

The comedy show at Osaka Joe’s Sushi has *ENDED,* mostly due to the fact that it is now a BBQ restaurant. Onward!

I was hired for the second time in a row to model at the GRAMMYS for MasterCard! I was once again promoting the MC Priceless Lounge – not only the BEST lounge before the show, but the ONLY place you could buy alcohol in the entire STAPLES Center! Needless to say, it was VERY popular πŸ˜‰

On March 3rd, I was at the Auto Trade Show in Visalia, CA for MPA and Pure Energy parts! It was a LOT of fun, I was Marilyn and I got to sing and dance, mingle, and feel the breeze from the “subway”!
You can see some pictures from these Marilyn events in my “Marilyn-personator” photo album!

Ok, here are the UPDATES for upcoming shows!!!

I will be a runway model in the 2nd Annual Vintage Glamour Bridal Show at UCLA’s Ackerman Ballroom on SUNDAY, MARCH 24th from 11am-3pm!! Come out and see all of the beautiful dresses and such!!!

If you’re looking for a comedy show, I hope you can make it to The Ranch in San Miguel, CA on WEDNESDAY, MARCH 27th at 8pm!!

John Clark and I had another AMAZiNG show at Osaka Joe’s Sushi in Morro Bay on Dec 14th and 15th, with Kris Rubio and headliner Steve Zorbalas! I am constantly humbled by the amazing friends, fans and family who come out and show their support at these shows. I am so very lucky to know all of you, and to get to see you at such wonderful and uplifting events!

While I was up in the San Luis Obispo area, I was asked to pose as Marilyn for the February – March cover of a local magazine (more details coming soon!) at the Estrella Warbirds Museum in Paso Robles! There are a few film festivals happening in SLO soon, and Marilyn certainly ties right in, doesn’t she? You can BET I’ll be updating this website as the newsstand release date draws closer – Extra! Extra!

I also had a fun set at a comedy show at the Tap House in Huntington Beach, CA on Tuesday, December 18th (I apologize for all of the retro-active updates this month, but December has been a whirlwind of activity and I am still catching up with myself)!

And now for the UPCOMING EVENTS:

On SATURDAY, DECEMBER 29th at noon (PST), I will be appearing on LA Talk Live for LA LA Land with Brett Chapin! If you’d like to call into the show and talk with us on the air, please do! The number to call is (323) 247-7443. I can’t wait for this show, and I hope to get to talk with LOTS of you! This show is going to be so much fun!

Looking forward to 2013…!

I will be on stage for the Crispy Comedy Show at the Universal Bar & Grill (near Universal Studios) on
THURSDAY, JANUARY 3rd at 9:30pm! This show is FREE, and parking is also FREE!

The Chinese New Year (the year of the Water Snake) is approaching in February! The Chinese take this time to forgive grudges, reconcile, and sincerely wish peace and happiness for everyone… Pass it on!!!

Thank you again for your love and support, and thank you for continuing to follow my journey!
